Series 4: Programme 7 (of 11) - 'Communicating for Change - Part 1'

We live in an age of information and communication technology (ICTs) which is rapidly transforming the society and economies we live in. ICTs offer an unprecedented chance to connect the poor to people and business all over the world. Yet they remain on the whole excluded, which is opening up a digital divide. Communicating for Change demonstrates that this does not have to be the case, that technology can and is working for the poor, bringing benefits to wider sectors of society.

Bridging the Divide - China

Isolated physically and symbolically by the Great Wall, rural communities in Northern China have not been able to benefit much from the country's burgeoning IT industry. Most of the huge rural population have never seen a telephone, let alone used the internet. A joint project between United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Chinese government means to address this and help alleviate poverty by creating an infrastructure so that the rural poor can access vital information via information and communication technologies (ICTs).

Internet Oasis - Jordan

The Kingdom of Jordan is pioneering information technology centres to bridge the digital divide and bring technology within reach of women and men who are poor, young and old, to the most remote areas of Jordan. These centres have brought affordable access to vital information and training, enabling all of Jordan's communities to use information and communication technologies (ICTs) for self-development.

Caribbean Connection - Dominican Republic
image from video
At first glance, El Limon in the Dominican Republic looks like any other Latin American mountain village at the end of a dirt road. It is picturesque, with thatched roofs and donkeys in the streets set against the rugged scenery. Behind the scenes, however, technology is breathing change into the village. The village communicates with the outside world using e-mail, farmers coordinate an organic agriculture project via the internet, children learn using CD-ROMs, and older children and adults have started back to school.

Winding Hope - Rwanda
image from video
Radios are providing a lifeline to the isolated children of Rwanda, thousands of whom have been forced to take on the role of adults heading households after being orphaned by the genocide, war and HIV. Project Radio Rwanda was created to distribute radios that are powered without electricity or batteries, and provide vital education to these children about practical issues such as health care, clean water, improved farming methods and a host of desperately important subjects.
